Trust me, if you try it enough times you will start to get it (it took me probably over a hundred tries!) If you find that after repeated attempts you are getting worse, it's probably because your fingers are getting tired (this was my biggest problem). If this is the case then take a long break - I found that if my fingers were fresh I did much better. Even taking a few days off entirely somehow allowed my skill to improve when I came back.

does anyone have tips for fingering for the first riff?

I cant use my pinky very well, so that could be why I have problems playing this one

Well my fingers go:

Code:
Frets:   GRGRYRYRBRYRYBO
Fingers: 121232324121234

Works pretty well for me.

I find it easier to slide earlier and use your index and middle fingers more often:

Code:
Frets:   GRGRYRYRBRYRYBO
Fingers: 121121213121234

But different fingerings will work better for different people. See what works best for you.

I always keep finger 1 held down and I just tap the other frets (until the 1234 at the end). Finger 1 is on green for the first 3 notes, then I slide it to red and keep it held down on red the rest of the riff.

here's what i do

1211(hold down the whole time)21213121234

etc., pretty much the same as JCirri's (great minds think alike, huh)

if you want to hammer on, i suggest strumming the first five notes, then everything is easier than HO/PO ing the whole riff.

if you're having trouble with the star power in between the GY chords, don't worry, because those aren't very important. you want to at least be able to nail the ones in the main riff, that should hold you for the verses. the beginning of the solo also provides one half star power gauge, so you can use that when needed.

that's what i meant, when the orange one hits i just slide my hand up, and i don't strum, i just slide it up (hence hammering it on...if you still don't get it, if i get a digital camera, i'll film it for you...but that'll be like, never, so don't get your hopes up...)

i'm not asking about HOW to achieve it, but the proper times to USE it...

I find it best to only use SP during the main riffs. Any other section of the song contains an almost guaranteed miss, so I have the best chance of staying at 8x during the main riffs.
